    CD50 problems

Got a Beosystem 5000 and the trusty CD50 started with slow draw movement, but with a light pressure help it would close but now the player has stopped. Removed the cover and found the problem, 'fluff' for the draw movement problem but... with the cover off/power on/and a cd loaded there dosn't seem to be any spin from the motor? although it's lifting the disc up to the motor

Any help would be greatful or a independant repairer near Oxford, UK would be great. thanks

    Re: CD50 problems

The CD50 disc spindle motor is a brushless motor with its own control circuit. The coils or Hall sensors may be faulty, but the first thing I should check is whether the 'disc clamped' switch closes. It should engage once the tray is completely closed and the disc is in position, and should give a positive 5V on pin 19 of 8IC310. The switch may be dirty as a result of the same 'fluff' you pulled out of the motor mechanism.

Does the carrier servo move at all or does it stay in the home position? The disc detection mechanism can also be at fault, it's a little light gate (LED/photodiode assembly) that detects whether a disc is loaded. If the optics are dirty, it will not engage either.

Both are probably part of a safety interlock circuit that disables the laser if there's nothing in the player. Give the player a good cleaning, that's always a good place to start. Be careful with the laser lens -- any grease or dirt on there (from your fingers) can interfere with its operation.

Thank you very much, this was my first post and to receive this responce is very encouraging. I will again clean as my update is that when I loaded again I got the CD to play but the disc wouldn't eject and after I got the disc out it wouldn't play again.
My knowledge of the componets as you describe is limited so my question is 'is there a circuit diagram available' but my gutt feeling is the light gate.
Todate at the moment... No disc play, draw face droops without assistance to close, disc lifts 4 times, no top motor spin, front panel displays 00:00 onload and then 1, after the 4 lifts of the tray it goes to the standby light only.

yes, please see my other post in the other CD50 thread

you need to have a paid subscription to have the right to download the service manuals that have been scanned and placed on the main Beoworld site

First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*
