Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

Suddenly. none of the 3 remotes I have for my beloved Beomaster 5000 is working.  Recently my son got ahold of the MCP and I was wondering if he somehow disabled the Beomaster from communicating with the remotes?  Hopefully there is a code...

If not, I do have an older Beomaster 5000 of which I could possibly harvest for parts to fix the unit.  Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

    Hi and welcome to Beoworld.

Does the Beomaster have power to it IE:- is the samll red LED lon the right hand side illuminated? Your son may have initited a timer function via the MCP5000. In the meantime I'll have a look at the user manual and see how to cancel this awaiting your response.

Re: Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

Have you tried pressing the RESET button on your MCP5000 1st?

Anyhow - how to cancel programmes via the MCP5000:-

1 Press STEP When you see a display of the instruction you want to cancel press CLEAR. Both the display and the programmed instruction disappear and are cancelled.

Repeat the STEP & CLEAR as many times as necessary, to cancel as many instructions as required. When all stored or programmed instructions have been cancelled, you will see this display NO INPUT.

    Hope this helps,

    Chris.

    Hi Chris,

The Beomaster does have power and works fine otherwise.  The remotes also work when used with the connected MCL.

If there is a reset button on the MCP I've never seen it.  I tried the step...clear instructions, but only see a "no transmission" readout.

Re: Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

My bad - I assumed there would be a reset button on the MCP5000 as I'm sure there is one on the later MCP5500's onwards. Try a hard reset - simply unplug your Beomaster 5000 from the mains for 10 minutes and see what happens.

It is beginning to look like a problem with the IR reciever on your BM5000 though.

Drat, I unplugged and still no luck.  Any tips on finding and replacing the IR receiver?  Or perhaps someone else knows a code I can try?

Can't help feeling that this is a software issue...

I might be talking out of my *ss, but from a brief glimpse through the service manual I have the impression that BM5000 should have a battery of sorts somewhere inside, apparently powering the settings memory (no flash nor eeprom in the 80s...).

If this really is some kind of a programming issue, it might be resolved if you find the battery and disconnect it for ten minutes or so. I believe your BM5000 has to come open in any case.

    Thanks Mika

A quick look inside showed no battery.  I did not lift the panel to vertical, but I would assume that the battery would be easy to get to...since it's engineered by B&O!

The reciever responded intermittantly to the remote(s) this afternoon.  weird.

Sounds like a dodgy connection to the IR transceiver in the BM5000 to me!

Re: Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

Could very well be like Peter suggests.

You could also check for dust accumulated on the receiver (and senders) at the board behind the glass (left side). Still no luck, replace the capacitors at the processor board.

There is a battery inside the CPU metal casing, it's a lithium battery. A low battery won't normally affect remote control functions but instead have the Beomaster forget sound settings (volume/bass/treble etc.) and preset stations when not mains powered so I wouldn't suspect the battery in this case.

Thanks Martin and Peter,  - Martin you helped me before restore my CD 50 spindle motor so thanks a second time.

I'll check for dust and loose connections.  What's strange is sometimes it works, then stops again.

Re: Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

My bet will be on marginal capacitors. There are a couple in the power supply area as well, 5-6 smaller ones (10-22uF or so) if I remember correctly.

Re: Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

    Dear Martin et. al.

I do have an old non-working beomaster 5000.  I wonder if simply swapping out the entire display section- which seems to include the IR receiver - may work in this case?  I'm afraid that my soldering and electronic skills will lead me to a worse problem than the minor annoyance of the remotes not working.

Or are the questionable capacitors indeed in other areas as you've described?

Re: Beomaster 5000 and MCP not communicating

You could try of course, but the caps in question here are also at the processor board and in the power supply area.

I have the same message on my remote...same problem. Every button returns a "no transmission" message except the muting button. However the mute button doesn't actually mute anything.
