    Beolab 4000 and BC9500 v BS3000

Hi there - thought I'd share this experience with you - I bough a brand new BS3000 about 3 years ago and a pair of Beolab 4000's - the system sounded ok but lacked the fullness that I had with my BC9300. I messed around with the adjustment screws at the back of the 4000's (W &T) and incresed the W to get more bass. The system then sounded great, to me anyway. I recently had a hankering for another classic beosystem and bought a superb 9500 from Graham (joeygolf boy?) on this site. I got it home and plugged it into the 4000's and it sounded boomy and too much bass - I wasn't that bothered as it was still good and I love the design of the 9500. Today I remembered about the screws on the back of teh speakers and returned them back to their normal position - result, really good clear sound that isn't boomy and sounds much warmer than the BS3000. Now I really want some Penta III's to go with it once I've sold my BS3000. I don't regret what might be seen as a backward step at all, the 9500 has more connections for record deck, reel to reel and iPod - fantastic and beautiful peice of equipment - thanks again Graham for a brilliant system.

    Hello Alex,

I'm glad you are pleased with your BC9500, thanks for the kind words.

I'm surprised that you found such a difference between the 9300, 3000 and 9500 in terms of the tone of the sound produced. I have always found them to be roughly similar when their controls are set to "flat".

To make more room in my workroom, I have recently changed my passive test speakers from S80.2 to CX50!! I confess that I may have left Loudness "on" on your BC9500 which would maybe account for the over boomy sound from your "Bass Enhanced" BL4000's

However, as a general rule, I would always recommend using the front panel adjustments provided rather than "meddle" with the service set up of the speaker linearity which could have disastrous consequences for the speaker drivers if double boosted!

    Hi Graham

Yes, in future I shall not be adjusting the speakers but use the controls on the system itself - much safer option. But all is good now. The main difference in sound was between the BS3000 and 9500 in that the BS3000 doesn't seem as warm - to me I much prefer the 9500.

    Kind Regards

    Andrew
