Apple TV via BV7-40MKII Digital sound problems - Toslink to coaxial

I have seen a few threads on something similar though none have helped as yet.

My AppleTv is connected via the Camera connectors on a BV7-40MKII. Sound is also via one of these http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AA1720&keywords=toslink&form=KEYWORD (A4 on the optical in) as well as the RCA plugs.  Problem is I can't get optical sound to work... Only works via the RCA leads and the sound is not great in the main room.

I have tried two converters and am assured that these are working. I am stuck unable to fault find this problem.  As a matter of fact I can't even tell if the other 3 optical connections into the BV7 are working as they all have scart connectors attached as well. They are hard to seperate...

    Help...

    Beoaus.

Hopefully I can assist or at least give a way forward.

No problem with the adaptor you are using.  Now a checklist.

    1) Digi Coax into the correct input and properly configured SW - can the camcorder input have digital sound assigned?

    2) Can you use AV4 which can have digital sound assigned?

    3) At worst you could use a scart to phono adaptor (similar to those provided with XBOX etc) and route your three RCA/phono plugs in that way and assign digital sound

    4) Alternatively use the Component HD input (which would necessitate buying a new lead) on AV4 and assign a digital input also.

Re: Apple TV via BV7-40MKII Digital sound problems - Toslink to coaxial

    Hi BeoAus

I have also used the Jaycar Toslink to S/PDIF to connect a PS3 into the BV7-40 Mk2 and it works very well.  However, both the audio and video go into AV4 and everything can be setup in the config menu.  I think that this is the proven way to go and I don't think that you can run the other two inputs (camcorder and A4) together at the same time - might be wrong though!.  If you can get the right video cables, I would choose that route.

    Regards

    Geoff

The digital inputs on the mkII 7-40 (and the mkI) can only decode surround sound signals. Standard 2-channel PCM (what the Apple TV spews out) isn't supported.

Sure about this? I think others are using the AppleTV via SPDIF in BV740-MKII. If so does that mean movies get 5.1 but you can't listen to music? I can't even listen to surround sound.

I have used AV4 for a Panasonic Blue Ray system, it also uses the DVI input and A1 on the coaxial digital input.  Just the way it was orginally setup. On my setup, AV1- V8000, AV2, Foxtel IQ, AV3 - Wii, AV4 - Panasonic STB. Camera - Apple TV, Projector - None.

Near as I can tell the A1-A4 ports are independant of AV1-AV4 though its sensible to match them if the connected devices output digital and analog audio.

I also have a box full of cables but I am still left at the same problem..

Re: Apple TV via BV7-40MKII Digital sound problems - Toslink to coaxial

We it looks like B&O have fixed the 2 channel sound problem through the coaxial input with a new part. I think this is called 2 Channel PCM. I have that working and the AppleTV sounds better. Also tried an optical connected CD player which now works and sounds better than the Apple TV..go figure. I suppose a Mac Mini is the next step.

    The fix...

Upgrade DSM SW version SW version 3.01 (part no 8344439, its a chip). Then enable PCM sound in customer service menu on TV. You will need 7.84 software or later on the TV though your dealer will have further details.

    Thanks to those unnamed...

    hi Beoaus

That is great news!! May i ask if you had to pay anything for this part as it in my opinion is a F***up at B&O in the first place?

Furthermore, is the chip already present in the MK IV or do I also need fitting??

I will have to pay... May have to follow it up. Happy to have it fixed initially and I have just resolved another Set top box problem...

The MK IV is a different beast which is beosystem 3 based, I am not sure if you need to....

Best you work out a test and try it.
