Question about BeoSystem3 and Playstation 3 sound formats

    Hi

I have just had my BS3 upgraded to SW 6.11, and now i suddenly can set my PS3 to send bitsream sound instead of LPCM, i put my Iron Man Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, and there was sound :) I just don't understand if this means the the BS3 now can decode bitstream HD sound. When the PS3 is in its menu, the BS3 displays PCM 7.1 in the "active soundsystem", when playing the Iron Man it says DD5.1, then i put Gone in 60 Seconds in, and selected "English uncompressed" in the menu, and now the "active soundsystem" displays PCM 5.1 instead of DD5.1 and the sound is much clearer.

Can anyone tell me what is going on ? I rememeber that when i first bought my PS3 i could not get any sound with the bitstream setting, now there is sound, i have just put my Grand Tourismo game in, and now the "active soundsystem" displays PCM 7.1.

I dont know what is going on, but i am very happy :)

    Gooooooo SW 6.11 :)

Very interesting and exciting!  I have always understood that the BS3 would not accept bitstream. Anything else new in 6.11?

    Watch out!

If you send a bitstream of DTS HD to a decoder which is only capable to decode DTS (you now the original lossy format), you WILL hear music because the container of DTS HD is backward compatable. It also contains the DTS signal.

I do not know of this is also the case with DD TrueHD (I think not!)

But you will not hear the DTS HD format!!!!

Ok, but the main thing here is that now there is sound when the PS3 is in bitstream mode, so something must have been changed/fixed.

    Anyone else with 6.11 and a Blu-Ray player or PS3 ?

    No,

    this was alway so!

The point is it was/is always possible to send a bitstream to the decoder (depending of course of your player; I am not familiar with the PS3). But the main issue was: do I get the HD-audio.

You will still NOT get the HD-audio if you bitstream it to your BS3; you will hear the lossy format! In contrast to the situation were your PS3 decodes the format to PCM en pass it over through HDMI to the BS3. Then you will hear the HD-audio.

situation A: bitstream a DTS HD MA to the BS3 (you will hear music.

    go to MENU/OPTIONS/SOUND/SOUND SYSTEM

the input = dts output dts

situation B: let the PS3 decode the DTS HD MA and pass it through HDMI to the BS3

    go to MENU/OPTIONS/SOUND/SOUND SYSTEM

the input & output = multichannel PCM

Thanks for the explanation. Makes perfect sense.

    Ok, i understand...

But something has happened since i never before had Blu-Ray sound when bitstream was selected.  Oh well, perhaps it is not HD audio compatible anyway, but now the sound is much clearer than before, so i am still happy :)

I want to get 6.11 so I can try it out myself. Sounds wonderful.

Bitstream through my PS3 always worked here? My mate used to borrow my PS3 and could only use it with his LCD if it was set to bitstream. Nine times out of ten I forgot to switch it back to PCM....and I still heard sound when it was set to Bistream in the PS3? That was always with my old BV7-40 MKIII.
