    Play Station as DVD player

    Hi,

anybody out there using PS as a DVD player, controlled by PUC? Tempting with 8-40 (blue ray + Full HD).

    Thanks again.

Doesn't the rocket launch-sounding cooling fan bother you? I could not handle the PS as a DVD player

I don't get that at all - it's silent here! I have the PS3 20GB version. Perhaps the older models had a louder fan? I'm sure I read that somewhere. The new models aren't noisy at all. Completely the opposite. Never heard the fan. Mind you, I do hear the fan on the Sky HD box.

yes i was at a friends house and couldn't believe he could just sit there and listen to (maybe not a rocket launch) but mini vacuum whirring away, i was trying to cry in the sad parts of a movie and just couldn;t do it with that noise!! Laughing

    Hi,

Wouldn't know about the noise since I've never seen a PS except boxed in.

Assuming that noise is not a problem, is it convenient to use (as a DVD player)?

I think the fan noise applies to the old original models.

Well, you just put the DVD in the drive and use either the controller or a bluetooth remote to control. Yeah, easy.

PS3 is an excellent bit of kit, upscaling standard DVD's and outputting 1080p via blu-ray discs - I hardly play any games on mine, highly recommended.

When playing blu-rays, the fan doesn't seem to be very loud at all. I think it gets noisier when using other features eg streaming media, looking at photos etc.

Here it works almost perfect with a STB-C controller (table 4.01 and 4.11)

You have to buy a Nyko infrared dongle to convert the ir-signals from the PUC/STB-C to the USB port.

You only have to switch on the ps3 manually on the ps or with the standard remote (ps button)

I've been using a PS3 at LifeStyle and home for ages now!  Upscales normal DVD's beautfully, plays Blu-Ray and brilliant games perfectly - and have never given me a moments trouble!

    I'd recommend highly!

Many many thanks to all for replies! To make it absolutely clear, however:

    1. Can I use my Beo4 to control PS3 (Yes?)

    2. Do I need the NYKO converter to do that?

    3. Can I (conveniently) use the PS3 ('s DVD player) by pressing "DVD" on the Beo4? (assuming it is not reserved for DVD1).

    Hello!

    1: Yes.

2: Yes, knowing that the ON/OFF function is not avaiblable with the Nyko dongle. You can create a Beo5 macro for turning the PS3 off.

    3: Yes.

i've had 3 ps3's - the first two packed up ( so much for their reliability )

nice machine but you can get a better upscaling dvd for less money plus the ps3 has problems with it's audio out , something to do with not decoding true hd and dts master hd - i don't really care as i use mine to play games mostly and the odd blu ray

my brother bought a pioneer dvd 610 which is a superb upscaler for £110 from richer sounds , it also plays dvd-a and sacd which may come in handy ( they sound amazing ! )

Support for DTS master and true HD was added some time ago with a software update.
