Help with technical issue - Beosystem 2300

Hi, this is my first post so please be gentle.

I have recently inherited my father-in-law's B&O collection as he has "upgraded" to  sony!!, including his Beovision MX7000 (still a better picture than any flat screen I've seen) and Beosystem 2300. I have a problem with the Beosystem's sound, but I'm not sure if it's the 2300 or the Beolab 6000 speakers, and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Basically there are certain guitar solo's and other parts that I know are in certain songs and they are completely missing or very, very quiet. I know nothing about this sort of thing but it sounds like there is a channel missing , or  one of the speakers in the 6000 has given up.

Does anyone have an idea how I could go about trying to get to the root of the problem?

    Thanks in advance,

    Oliver.

    Hi Oliver,

welcome to Beoworld and congratulations for a nice system at the right price Yes - thumbs up

First of all, I would check the input switches on the speakers. The Powerlink connections carry both channels, and you may have just both of them set to left (or right) now. So you might not be playing in stereo, but only the one and the same channel on both speakers - enough to make many recordings sound odd. The switch is easy to bump when installing the cables.

Older 6000's commonly fail in two areas.

    1. The tweeters burn out. The speaker will sound dull and lifeless. Remove tweeter from case, disconnect wires and measure the resistance. Open or closed circuit is bad, replace it. Good tweeter should have a few ohms (4-6) resistance.

    2. The flimsy rubber around the edge of the bass drivers is inclined to split causing bass notes to "frazzle". If one is gone I normally replace all 4

You would be surprised at the number of people who cant hear either of these faults!!!

    Regards Graham

    Thanks for the prompt replies.

Look's like I need both your advice. Thanks for the tip about the switch tournedos, I played about with the switch and swapped the power link cables around and that has sorted the problem, which I'm sure my neighbours are ecstatic about !!

During some "testing" I noticed the bass speakers are decidedly farty when there is low end bass so I want to replace the speakers. Any idea where I can get something like that joeyboygolf? (cheap preferably)

Thanks again, I was worried I'd have to send it away for repair, but thanks to you I don't.

    Merry Christmas.

    Oli.

You can get the replacements at B&O.

If you're a little handy you can replace the failing surrounds yourself.

Don't even try to fit foam surrounds as replacements - they sound crap!

I bought a pair of 6000's where this type of repair had been done - the 4 bass drivers are magnetically clinging to my work bench as I type this. The repair is expertly done but the cones hardly move and the sound reflected this.

You can order official replacements through a friendly B&O dealer and the cost is around £30 per driver.
