Avant to DVD1 via digital: Any benefit?

    Hi All

I have a RF 32" Avant with the Dolby board + a DVD1, and no external speakers. Currently they are connected by Scart but I was considering feeding the digital signal from the DVD1 to the Avant (on input 1 or 2) via a digital co-ax.

The question is, would it make any difference to the sound since I don't actually have any external speakers (just using the Avant's)?

    Cheers

The digital coax does not represent a huge outlay so I think it's save to say you just go and try it - and compare. However, the real difference will be heard when you do connect the external speakers.

Too see what the benefit may be, it's best you understand what actually happens when you connect digitally. Put simply, you end up using the electronics in the Avant to decode the sound, rather than the DVD1's electronics.

The digital output is effectively a 'direct data output' from the DVD disc itself. Connect this into your Avant, and it will decode the sound information instead.

The Avant's sound processing will be of a hugely superior quality to that in the DVD1, and when using for example, Pentas, BeoLab 1s, 3s etc... the difference may be large. Then again, many people are lucky enough to not be able to hear the difference! I wouldn't expect the difference with Avant speakers to be massive (as stunning as the speakers are).

    Interesting...

Pretty sure you will hear a delay between voice and the video if it works. May be ok for a CD through. Tell us how you go.

    Beoaus.

    Thanks for the advice all,

I think I will get a 1m cable and give it a try.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I was thinking of getting something decent from QED or IXOS but you guys may feel this is overkill and won't actually give any benefit over a more economy cable.

    Cheers

    Oh and one other thing!

Would this mean I won't get sound when watching a DVD in a link room (DVD1 is in the main living room)?

Having just put a DSS board in my Avant I'm keen to try thius with my DVD1 as well.

Does anyone have a link to the type of cable I need, or a spec?

I'm sure Sound Heavenly or Maplin might have something but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

    Cheers
