Help!
A few weeks ago I bought a Beogram 1700 as an interim solution until a really good Rosewood 400X turns up (I’m expecting a long wait!). The BG1700 was very carefully packed for transportation after advice from this forum, and my driving style radically adjusted whilst I drove the 100 miles home. For a variety of reasons, I haven’t had chance to set it up until today.
Whilst the deck is cosmetically excellent, I have discovered a number of problems that, despite trawling around the Beoworld site, I can’t find the precise answers I’m looking for.
The arm seems to be sitting very low in relation to the aluminium deck plate to the point that only minor disturbance means the stylus touches the deck plate.
The black lifting mechanism seems very fragile and quite loose.
On auto-starting the deck, the arm moves across but hits the edge of the record rather than sitting proud of the record and then lowering into the grove. It has to be lifted manually and placed in the first grove
Although the sound is ok initially, as the arm moves across the record the level of distortion rises significantly, which I thought was a failure of the anti-skating but now I’m not so sure.
At the end of the record the arm only partially lifts and returns to its resting position but with the stylus scraping the record as it does so.
The cartridge is only an MMC 20s but is clean and the cantilever seems to be in good condition. The arm is set up with a tracking force of 1.5gms.
Any advice gratefully received .
