Dear Gang, I happened to be standing very near my BV8 32" (USA spec) today and I noticed an electrical sound coming from the TV when there was no source playing. I have the TV hooked in to a high quality surge protector that's also supposed to keep the electrical signal coming in to the TV (and the BL3s that I have attached to the TV) very "clean". The sound isn't very loud and it occurs irrespective of whether or not a source is playing or if the external speakers are on. Just wondering if this is a "normal" thing that other BV8 owners can confirm. In general, I've been very happy with my BV8 - really enjoying the PQ and the sound quality. TIA, Mark

Trip & Henry, Thank you for your responses. Trip, this isn't related to my cell being in my pocket, but I'm aware of what you're describing as my BL4s that I have attached to my computer have a lot of static when a cell call comes in. Henry, I only hear this low volume electric noise when the TV is on (i.e. not in Standby mode). I find it reassuring that you're hearing something like this, too. Trip, do you hear a similar noise when your TV is on, but without an input inputting? Mark

Mark, No, I haven't experienced this anomaly on any of mine. Is it static or a hum? And when you say that it's heard when it's not in standby, but nothing is playing, do you mean that you have a source muted or that you can simply hear it in the silent gaps in a television program. For the record, the only two things I have ever known to make speakers hum (aside from the phone thing) are incorrect cables being used (which would not be the case with built ins) or the ballast on variable lighting on the same electrical circuit (which could absolutely apply). In fact, the latter occurs every few months and has become fairly routine (though sometimes a pain in the ass) to remedy. If there are any dimmers either on built in lighting or free standing lamps, the magnetic (or in some cases electrical) ballast may be bad. I even had to replace it in one of my showrooms once. I suppose you could run an extension cord to other rooms which may have different lighting scenarios to test this hypothesis, but I would also say that line conditioners are no match for bad or mismatched ballast on a shared circuit so don't rule this out just because you have one present. Good luck!

Sorry for the delay in follow-up on my part. Thank you everyone for responding to my original question.
Trip, I hear a fairly quiet electrical hum when close to the TV and when it's "on" (but, yes, it is more noticeable in quiet parts of music or video). I can't blame the noise on cell phones, improper wiring (only using B&O stuff), or electrical signal (the TV is plugged in to a $300 surge protector that supposedly filters the electricity). And, I notice it even when the rheostatic lights in the room are "off".
Henry, I'll test that soon. I have all my cords neatly hidden and tucked away so disconnecting inputs will require a little bit of time. However, I don't suspect that that is the problem as I hear it when the inputs are "off". Incidentally, are you implying that you hear a similar noise from certain inputs?
Soundproof, This sounds like a slight electrical hum, though I guess it could be the small fan. Soundproof, do you hear something similar to what I'm describing when you put your ear near your BV8 when flipping between songs or video on your Apple TV (i.e. when there's no sound being inputted in to the TV)?
TIA, Mark

Dear Gang, Anyone else with any insights to offer with regard to their BV8 having an electrical hum that's really only noticed when close to the TV. I'm repeating the question as I'm about to send my BV8 in for servicing if this is something that no one else notices. I've excluded all the things mentioned in this old thread by others. Mark

It could well be the power supply! I noise i've noticed on a few of my B&o machines (Beocenter 1, Beosound 1, ouverture, beolabs etc) Very very soft from the beolabs have to have my ear very close to the speaker grilles, maybe just maybe it's the active speaker system in the TV.

Helmut, Thanks for taking the time to reply and for the insight. Out of curiousity, does this fan noise that you're hearing sound like an electrical hum? Also, do you hear it more when toward the top righthand corner of the TV? TIA, Mark

I have a BV7 and I also hear an electrical hum, but this hum comes from the backlight of the screen. The humming is gone when the backlight is off or very bright.
I'm not sure if the BV8 has the "Picture Mute" function, but can you hear the hum when you mute the picture (P.MUTE) ?

Matt, I believe we should distinguished between two noices - one is coming from the left, this is the fan and another is coming from the right. It sounds like a hum from a switched power supply - known as a hum from coils. It could be different in loudness and it is pretty "normal". I don't care about it, because I hear nothing also when switching to "Mute". Helmut

This hums comes from the backlight inverter and is caused by the thin metal blades of the inverter. It may need to be replaced. Normally, these layers of metal blades are glued together with glue to suppress this hum. If you are a hacker you may try to fix it by yourself but only do at your own risk and if you know what you do. ;-)
