I am looking at buying a set of Beolab 9 to connect to a non B&O equipment.

I have been advised by a dealer that you can use the headphone jack from the equipment in my case it is a LG Rear Projection TV to connect to the Beolab 9.

TV->Headphone->Line into Beolab9 

Apparently In doing it that way above in the long run, I also have been advised that it will damage the speakers. As it might drive the volume too high as there is no control module as such to limit the volume in case of damage.

They have recommended using a Beoport to act as a "middle" control box as such to solve that issue above.

 TV->Headphone->Beoport->Beolab9

Some Questions that I have is;

Can anyone shed some knowlege in regards to this particular setup?
It is best to run it through a Beoport so it uses the full DIN plugs instead of a single plug?
Will there be any quality loss using the above 2 methods?

Not sure I would want to use a headphone amplifier to drive the BL9s - most are pretty poor afterthoughts. The Beoport will offer a solution as you will be using the volume control on the Beoport I imagine. I take it that there is no other audio out on your TV?

 The TV has RCA out (White+Red) & Headphones.

What kind of connector box would I need to connect the RCA out to the Beolab 9?

I have not seen the Beoport so I am not sure how to integrate them together to make it all work.

If it is pre-amplifier output, you need 2 x 6270856 phono male to Power Link line-in cables which are available from your dealer and the inputs on the Beolab 9s set to Line. If it is fixed line level, then you need a pre-amplifier to give you some volume control.

The dealer is essentially getting you to use the Beolab 9s as if you were connecting to an iPod which is perfectly valid. However headphone amplifiers are not usually part of a TV that have much money invested in them by the manufacturer - the headphone amplifier in the BC2 for instance is really rather poor! I would therefore always look for an alternative if it is possible.

On the back of my TV, There are two RCA out options.

1) Variable Audio Out (L+R)

2) Monitor Out (Video+L+R)

How do I find out if those RCA port is pre-amplified?

If I end up using 2 x 6270856 phono male to Power Link line-in cables in the long run, It shouldn't cause any damage to the speakers itself? except the obviously physical damage and running it too high volume in prolong periods.

The manual is not playing ball withy my computer! I take it that there are speaker outlets as well? If so, I suggest that this will work fine using the RCA outputs. The user manual should have a bit about what the RCA outputs are for and I suggest it will say for output to powered speakers.

Yes, you can connect a non-B&O source into BeoLab 9 (or Beolab 3, which use the same Line input method) without the need for BeoPort, but you just need to be careful over the volume levels you use.

First (VERY important!), ensure that you have a variable volume output from the TV/MP3 player or other source (test using headphones first if possible).  You then need a cable running from these outputs to two 180 degree 5 DIN plugs (one for each BeoLab 9), where the line input is fed to pin 3 and the signal ground is fed to pin 2.  Switch the Lab 9's to "Line" input and you're sorted.

What kind of volume levels are you referring to before damage to the speakers occur at line input?

Hi,

You will probably find that the volume needs to be very low, as even a small volume in the variable line outputs will become a BIG volume once the 'Lab 9's have amplified it!  One other option if you want to play safe is to buy a cheap hifi pre-amp and connect this between the TV and the speakers.  This can be hidden out of the way, with the volume control set to a level that gives the right range of sound for your room.  Once set up, you should never need to touch it, but it will give you extra peace of mind that you're not risking damage to those lovely 'Lab 9's.
