Beo4 (+BV8) "loses" Apple TV connection

    Hi,

I have connected my BV8-32 to AppleTV. This is an excellent combination in many ways - for example I never used to watch Youtube videos, but now I watch them almost every day. For example, while watching TV if I sudenly want to know more about something I simply use my Beo4 and search the Youtube and watch the video on my BV8 - nice and simple (A case in point last night was B. Obama and then J. Cousteau)

There is one problem, however: after some time, perhaps 30min- some hours, if I'm not using the AppleTV, it does not respond to the commands by Beo4 anymore. When I go back to "TV" - "menu" - "connections" and so forth and choose the "iPod remote" again, it works ok.I have to do this several times a day, which is somewhat...not nice.

So it is as if the Beo4/BV8 somehow loses the connection with the AppleTV. AppleTV is connected through HDMI cable, BTW.

Anybody out there with any suggestions?

It doesn't do it on mine. Can try the other IR port maybe? By not using the ATV do you mean it is playing a movie and you do not use the remote or is the AT just idling? I think you can use a digital camera to find out if the eye/sensor attached to the cable is sending IR signals.

Go into the Settings menu of Apple TV and under General I think there's something that says remote pairing.  Unpair your remote, hit pairing again and quickly put the Apple TV remote in your back pocket and hit GO repeatedly on your Beo4 ... once the Apple TV says the remote has been paired, take the battery out of your Apple remote and leave it that way.

I don't know exactly what communication happens between the Apple remote and Apple TV during the pairing process, but I discovered (through quite a bit of frustration I might add!) that it would appear there's some sort of two way communication happening between the two.  Best to just take the Apple remote out of the equation and leave it out.

JK, I mean ATV is on standby, not in use.

    Alex, thanks! Will do that!

Question are you controlling the Apple tv through a STB controller from your Beo 4

    Thanks

There shouldnt be a need to pair the Beo4 with the ATV. It could be a fault in the BV8 or in the ATV and I think we need to circle on that.

The ATV has some sort of sleep mode, I dont think though it goes into that until you press "Play" on the apple remote for several seconds. It could be that the normal signal form the B&O STB doesnt wake it up.

Rather then fiddling with the TVs menu can you just try using the Apple remote for a sec and then the Beo4?  See if that brings things back to normal.

I am assuming your ATV is on the latest software, correct? I am pretty sure mine doesnt any any sleep modus, its always on unfortunately.

I agree. There's no reason that ATV should go into sleep mode. My understanding is that in the current software ATV does not have a sleep mode. Even in the old ATV software I doubt that the Beo4 would have been able to put ATV in sleep mode given Apples implementation of "long" IR codes.

Agree with jk1002, what happens when you use the Apple Remote?

Re: Beo4 (+BV8) "loses" Apple TV connection

    Sinuhe,

My USA spec 32" BV8 occassionally does the same thing.  I don't have an answer as to why this is, but I agree with the other people posting regarding the Apple TV's lack of sleep mode if you leave it on.

For the record, my Apple TV is connected to my BV8 via an HDMI cord.  I am using the "DTV" button on the Beo4 to turn on the TV.  The Apple TV stays on constantly as B&O hasn't included the IR signal to shut off the Apple TV.  In my case, the only way to turn off the Apple TV is to unplug it as the IR blaster keeps the Apple Remote from shutting off the Apple TV and, of course, the Beo4 can't shut it off due to the lack of coding.

By the way, my "work around" for this problem involves me pressing the "TV" button on the Beo4 to click the TV in to a different input, and then clicking "DTV" again on the Beo4.

P.S.  I called the guy that is in charge of B&O's USA-compatible TVs to mention that their current IR codes for the Apple TV (I think they're called "iPod Remote" on the BV8's menu) don't allow the Beo4 to shut down the ATV.  He politely said he'd look in to it.  I mentioned that I was thankful that B&O was essentially supporting a competitor's product by including these Apple IR codes in the BV8 menu.  However, while I was talking to this person, I was also thinking to myself, "for God's sake, B&O better to do this and more to be compatible with Apple products" as I believe that their products' compatibility with what I see as the de facto "digital media hub" might end up proving vital to B&O's livelihood.  I'm definitely of the school of thought that B&O's competencies (like self-amplified speakers and upscaled flat panels) need to be capitalized on rather than wasting B&O's comparitively limited resources writing code for their own digital media hubs which will almost certainly pale in comparison.

Re: Beo4 (+BV8) "loses" Apple TV connection

I think I see actually something similiar. Sometimes it seems it looses the source. I haven't seen a pattern yet. I.e. yesterday when the CD was finished on my BC2 (which is MLed to the BV8) I changed the disk and pushed play, nothing. Forward wouldnt work either. When I selected the source again (Disk) it took a sec and then it started working. The same I think happened once or twice when playing DVD.

You dont actually have to switch to another source, I think if you just select the current source again it works.

I think this happens for me when I use both the keypad of the BC2 and the Remote and the remote is on another source. I.e. I start a DVD and then start controlling the setup while the Beo4 is in Radio or CD. I have also seen that with the TV controls. I.e. I couldn't go into the menu of the TV until I reconfirmed the source from the remote.

So I dont think you need to re-select the Ipod remote, just select tthe source again on Beo 4 Remote.

    Cheers

Re: Beo4 (+BV8) "loses" Apple TV connection

    Hi all,

JK's described behavior happened to me at times with an Avant masterlinked to a BS9000. I had to physically shut everything down by pressing the Standby button on the either the Avant or BS9000, and after a "restart" everything was fine.

But in this case, JK's and mine, it may be a masterlink issue.

Re: Beo4 (+BV8) "loses" Apple TV connection

The Apple TV and the Beovision 8 seem perfect for each other.  I've successfully paired the Beo4 with the Apple TV using the DTV input and selecting "Apple Remote" as the device on the Beovision 8.  So far, no issues with standby -- under Auto Standby, select DTV OFF "Never".

My question though is whether anyone has issues navigating the menus with the Beo4.  I detemined that "Exit" on the Beo4 corresponds to "Menu" on the Apple Remote, and "Go" functions as "Play/Pause".  Both work fine.  The "Up", "Down", "Left", and "Right" buttons often scroll continuously, however, which makes it difficult to navigate precisely.  Sometimes I can interrupt the scrolling by pressing another button, but this is sporadic at best.  I often end up reaching for the dedicated Apple Remote in these instances.  I don't have these issues when I use my Marantz RC 9500 universal remote.  I was wondering whether the codes may need tweaking, or if there may be a key sequence to prevent the continuous scrolling.  Any help would be appreciated.
