    Failing CDX Player

We have recently moved and of all our audio gear the only piece of equipment that seemed disturbed by the move was the Bang & Olufsen CDX player.

The Beomasters 2400 and 4500 were happy as clams, as were the Beograms 4000, 4002, 4004, and 8002. Ditto the Beocords 8004 and 9000.

However the CDX was decidedly unhappy. It refused to play a CD, merely advancing the CD about 3mm and then sporting a BIG ?

Numerous attempts to get the player to play a CD proved to be futile. Then from nowhere it played one after another.

Mid-evening (we had company for dinner) the CDX refused to play a new CD. 20 or more attempts proved futile. After the company had left, I tired again, and it was if there had never been a problem the CDX played the CD flawlessly.

Any ideas what is going on here?

I would hazard a guess that it is the motor. Needs a clean and service. I take it that the solder joints have already been attended to in the past?

Yes, solder joints, especially those riveted vias on the audio and servo boards will need attention.

    Re: Failing CDX Player

The CDX was based on a model CD-104 (and built) by Phillips, as you may know.  I have the CD-104 and found similar symptoms then did some internet research.   The issue was very common, apparently, but can be fixed by re-soldering, as Dillen mentioned.

I have not yet had the time to repair mine but was able to find a service manual, in CD format, available from a vendor on E-Bay.  Hope this may help . . .

    Good luck!

    Re: Failing CDX Player

I just read of another CDX player with similar problems to mine, but this time I got “lucky” and the suggestion to clean the lens did the trick.

I carefully cleaned the lens and like magic, the CDX played CD after CD with no problem. It has been several weeks, so I believe this was the whole problem, if it can be called a problem at all.

I am a bit embarrassed at such a simple fix, but grateful none the less.

    Thanks for the useful tip!

    Jeff
