    BeoVision L4500

    Hi All,

just won this as part of my 'really old second hand & cheap' B&O campaign mainly for the Beolink 1000 (seeing as I bought the video terminal last month by mistake for my MX4000)

     http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140249894184&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004

Anyone got any ideas where I could get a contrast screen from? - it looks so much better in photos  - the TV will be going in my sons bedroom for now and my Beolink video terminal will probably be going back on Ebay

wish I had checked how far east of Yorkshire he was though *sighs following Google Map investigation*

As long as you are prepared to be patient, it may be best to wait for a donor TV to come up as non-working on eBay as non-working B&O TV's from that era routinely attract no bids at all so it should cost you very little.

If it is an L rather than an LS or LX with the screen missing, you will need to change the whole of the front section ... trying to mount a contrast screen on the standard L front will result in misery ... I know ... it happened to me.

I have a screen, but not the front plastic section.

    Hi:

I was going to buy this too based on the archive photo that was at the top of the bid. It looked really nice. A quality period piece. Then I scrolled down and saw the pictures of the actual item for sale and thought that it didn't look half as nice. Perhaps the contrast screen makes all the difference. I guess it makes the "box" of the set look more uniform.

Either that or it was/is an absolute pig of a set and b&o commissioned a photographer to photograph it at its most flattering angle!

    Thanks

The LX is quite a beautiful beast ... I was watching my father's last night ... the piano black with polished aluminium trim ... looks contemporary even now, 20 years on.

If you are "STILL" waiting for LCD and PLASMA to catch up, you wont go far wrong with this!

I was in a very large branch of Tescos (Supermarket) yesterday and they had maybe 50 flat screen TVs of all sizes, brands  and prices in there all showing the same SD terrestial TV output. I didn't think a single one of them had a picture that looked as good as my LS5500 would have done displaying the same output. Many of them had truly horrible PQ.The idea that you can improve picture quality for normal non-HD broadcasts by upgrading from CRT to LCD is the biggest con trick foisted on the buying public since the oil companies convinced everyone that cars running on lead-free petrol are environmentally friendly. There are reasons to go flat-panel, but day to day viewing of SD broadcasts isn't one of them!

I agree, I was looking at some "top line" Sonys the other day and was not impressed with their rendering of an SD source - blotchy to say the least. Why would you bother?

    Re: BeoVision L4500

    cheers guys

I am picking it up on Thursday so I guess I will see how it looks from then - I get the remote anyway so that is a plus

I reckon a bit of love and some TLC and the TV will scrub up nice - but I agree - the stock photo looked awesome - I often find that pictures do not do justice to stuff like this - I tried to get a good pic of my MX4000 when I cleaned that and I could just not get one looking anywhere near as nice as the naked eye

The LX4500 and LS4500 really do look just as awesome in real lfe as in that stock photo, but the L4500 does not since it doesn't have the contrastglass. The glass is very important to that design.

If you ever get the chance, go for the successors of the LX4500 (25") / LX5500 (28").

The LX5000 (25") or the LX6000 (28"). The picture quality is even better. The light sensor on the LX4500/LX5500 only adjusts the contrast, but the sensor on the LX5000/6000 also adjusts the colour and brightness during the day. They also have the newer Black Line/Black matrix screens (better black levels).

The speakers of the LX4500 / LX5000 (25") are quite impressive, but the speakers of the LX5500 / LX6000 (28") are even better (Bass-reflex speakers).

Aha, is that why the LX5000/6000 tube looks darker (when it's not switched on) than the tube of the LX4500/5500? A darker tube? I always suspected that the newer models had a darker contrast glass, but now I get that it is the actual tube that is darker :)

Is the 25" models better than the 28" counterparts when it comes to quality of the tube? I've noticed that some of the 5500s I've seen the last five years have some PQ problems such as blurry picture, but every 25" model I've seen these last years still have a really sharp picture (although the contrast isn't always was it once was)

I'm still looking fpr a nice LX5000 (or 6000) to replace my 4500 :-) When at work, I'm surrounded by fantastic plasmas showing HD content, but I still don't want a bigger screen than 25-28" at home - and for non-HD content I prefer the CRT PQ - so I have no plans to get a B&O lcd or plasma.

I agree about CRT PQ for non-HD. I have three Beovisions which are variations on a theme, but bear in mind after 15 years differences in PQ may depend as much  on how well an individual TV is lasting as it does on the model.

LX2502 - Stunning picture and sound. Speakers have some foam rot.

LX2800 - Stunning sound, picture a little blurred conpared to the other two.

LS5500 - Stunning picture, better than any LCD or Plasma I have seen for 4:3 SD output. Sounds excellent  by standards of 'normal' TV's from other manufacturers but disappointing compared to the other two Beovisions (Single full range speaker not tweeter/woofer). Has 15 WPC amplifier built in which is inadequate for Home Cinema but sounds stunning powering non-B&O passive speakers, saving up for a pair  of C/CX speakers!

    Total cost for all three TV's with 3xBeolink 1000's = £160.

    Re: BeoVision L4500

That is my LX5500 above september 2006 on Lauritz.com here in Denmark

It's still working great. Sound picture and quality really is better than most of the new non CRT tv's out there. It's a joy to use and look at. The only thing done since getting it home has been cleaning it behind the contrast screen, replacing the antena module and update the software.

It came with several link products too which I still got. Once the Beolink 1000 got rebuild I had no trouble at all and as long as it can serviced I will use it.

picked it up and the condition is superb - the beolink 1000 is mint

i am wondering whether to just get someone to make me an acrylic sheet the size of the TV and slot it in?
