I would like to think that most dealers would, on receiving a phone call such as yours, actually talk you through the most likely fixes before mentioning any charges. 
Bsnd 9000 service calls are relatively rare, and I the majority are either in need of cleaning (a by-product of the relatively open design for the lens, and the dusty sensor issue) or in need of the mech aligment changing, following a change from wall to table or stand mounting.
My guestimate would be for every 10 calls we get, at least seven never come in for repair, because of the fixes above, which tend to work.
