Buyer Beware - Old Phono Cartridges

I should have known better really than to buy an 'untested' MMC 6000 from ebay, but I can't really afford a new Soundsmith at the moment, and can't really justify the cost, because i'd want the CL at a minimum if I had to buy new!

The cart came in the post today, and it sounded great - in one channel!

I tweaked the contacts to no avail, so I broke out the multimeter, and sure enough, one channel was open circuit.

Its a shame because cantelever and stylus look pristene, and the suspension appears great.

Anyway, I thought i'd at least get some use out of it.... I took the guts out of a good MMC20E and put them inside the MMC6000 casing! At least the cart now matches the arm. And yes, the picture is of my creation, and it seems to work just as well as it did before.

Anybody have a working MMC6000 or 20CL they want to dispose of for a fair sum?

    Sorry tpo hear that :-(

I've learnt the hard way that "untested" etc is ebay-speak for "I know that it doesn.t work, but I'm listing it as 'untested' to be able to actuall get any money fpr it". Every single "untested" item I've bought have been faulty :) Fortunately, I've always (except the first time) had this in mind when bidding.

Not that it helps much - The MMC 6000 would be last on my list when buying 2nd hand B&O cartridges. None of mine have worked out either. Maybe its the construction, age or just that they they just get used more...

    Beoaus.

I think its just the age of them, when I took it apart, the copper wire had clearly broken/corroded away from the contact. I did try to reconnect it, but it just snapped as soon as I touched it with a needle.

Like I said before, the diamond and cantelever looked perfect, like a brand new cartridge!

Never mind though, i'll have to excersice more caution with my purchases in the future. I've banned myself from buying on ebay for a while... I've spent too much on there recently, although I did get a great bargain of a mint Beosystem 3500 inc RL35 for £155! Its a shame that the wall brackets cost nearly the same price Stick out tongue
