Sound problems with Avant and Beolab 3 Speakers

    Hello

I have a Beosound 9000 connected via masterlink to Avant 28" vcr (1998). I have just attached a pair of Beolab 3's to the Avant as I have a Prologic sound card installed in the Avant, which has worked fine previously and powered Beolab 1's and Beolab 8000's. The right speaker is working intermittently - mostly not at all. It is not the speaker or cable as I have swapped them around to no avail - the right channel does not seem to work most of the time. If I connect the speakers directly into the Beosond 9000, they work fine. If I use speaker 1 option ( just the avant speakers) this also works fine when the speakers are connected to the Avant. I wondered whether the sound card may be faulty in the Avant, and if repalcements are still available or is there something simpler that I could try? Any ideas anyone?

    Thank you in advance

    Kind Regards

    Martin

It could be the board, but it could also just be a physical problem on one of the PL sockets - which means you can splice the cables to the one good socket, and it will be fine, as both left and right signals are present on each socket.

To test this, swap the switches on the (currently OK) left speaker, so that it becomes the right speaker electrically.

As the cables and speakers won't change, you will be fault finding just the PL socket on the board used for the r/h speaker.

Assuming you get an output, then you need to get a PL splitter, and run both speakers from the one PL socket.  Or you can chop into the cable and splice them, if youre happy doing so.

If this doesn't work, its an engineer job.

    Regards

Try changing the switches on the BeoLab 3s, so the right becomes the left and left becomes the right. This should allow you to tell whether the problem is with the socket or with the sound board.

Hello. Thanks for that. I've already tried switching the speakers over from Left to Right and also plugging the right speaker a different power link socket, but this has made no difference. RegardsMartin

Sounds to me like the sound module is on it's way to circuit board heaven. Always worth trying a different speaker setting if that worked before - choosing BeoLab 8000s should be fine.

Thank you everyone for your help. I no longer have the other speakers - I had them approx 3 yrs ago, and just used the speakers in the Avant for the last 3 yrs. I have tried speaker 2 as this automatically kicks in when you play a cd on the Beosound 9000. The problem is also there on speaker 3 when watching tv, video or DVD, so not just audio.

Sounds like the sound board to me. First course of action would be to speak to your dealer, I don't think there's much else can be done through us...

Re: Sound problems with Avant and Beolab 3 Speakers

There was a speaker setting that was used on my Avant a few years to test the sound.  It may have been BL4000's in the front and BL1's to the rear, the setting was described as improbable as it would never be used. The setting had the effect of bypassing the processor (and or filters) it was a useful test for me. The exact details were lost in the old forum. Perhaps someone had the information still?
