Today I reconnected my great beocenter 9500 which has been out of use for quite some time now.

Had great fun hooking it up to my Mac Mini (to the Aux port) and my lovely beolab 4500.

While playing with it I noticed something strange:

When I play music on the Mac Mini over the beocenter 9500 and then switch to CD play (and keep the Mac mini playing music), the source changes to CD, but I keep hearing the Mac Mini music??!?! I would expect that the beocenter 'blocks' the aux port when turning to CD.

Is this a defect or is this the way it should work?

If it is a defect: any ideas how to solve it?

Maybe I should try to offend somebody to get some intention, this seems to work in other posts  ? Just kidding; but I would really like to get some feedback on my question!

Ignore me if I'm speling drivel, but is, what you describe as 'AUX' actually  'A-Tape2'
If so, then it would keep playing so that recording could be made. All pins would be connected so it was an in and an out connection.
You could disconnect the unused pins........or just switch the Mac off.
Sheer guesswork, probably total rubbish!

You may well have ended up connecting the output if your BC9500 to the output of the MacMini (I made this mistake, my cables seem to be wired the wrong way round). When wired to the output, the sound will still appear (although it'll sound rubbish), but it won't go away when you switch to a different source.

No rubbish at all; it does exactly the same at A-Tape2 as on Aux! I would expect for the AUX connection (for instance when in use for a tv sound input); that the sound would stop, even if the tv keeps playing, when selecting another source on the beocenter 9500.

Any more ideas?

Did you try my suggestion? I had exactly the same issue as you with my BeoMaster 6500 when I first got it...

After reading your post, my first thought was: This can not be the case since I used this cable before (and I had taped off the connections that I did not have to use). But your comment on the rubbish sound made me rethink this: I had to turn the volume up very high and still was not happy with the quality. Maybe I picked the wrong cable???

So to be sure I rechecked and you were right on the spot! Wrong connections used! Thanks a lot!

Still no idea how I ended up using the wrong cable, I can also not remember what I would have used this cable for in the past. I am getting close to 40 years old; I start to feel it!

No problem! Again - this had me scratching my head when I first set up my BeoMaster 6500. Worked a dream with the CD7000, but all my 3rd party things sounded rubbish and were audible all the time. Thought the BeoMaster was faulty but it just turned out to be me being dull...

Are you playing lossless or mp3 files?  Is the sound going through the Mini's sound card?  Do you have DAC connected to the mini?  

 I thought that the sound coming out of the mini's sound card (or just about any pc) would be poor.  Some connect an external DAC to bypass the computer's sound card.   

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I have the MacMini connected the audio out of the MacMini to the aux input of the beocenter  with a mini-jack to 7-DIN cable. On the mac-mini I generally have AAC coded audio files and on an attached hard drive several ripped DVD files. I have MediaCentral from Equinux installed to operate the mac-mini.

I actually think the audio output of the mac-mini is not that bad, of course there is a sound quality difference compared to for instance CD play, but this is not really big to my opinion. I generally use it at relatively low volumes (it is my bedroom setup) and for that purpose it is very good!
