Many Questions on my new "Used" Pentas and Beocenter 9000

Happened to be in the right place at the right time and picked up a Beocenter 9000 with pair of Penta 6605 speakers and a 3300 Beogram all with a superb white B&O Stand. There are just a few questions and observations I have and hopefully someone here will be kind enough to to help me out.

    1) Sound is superb when I use RCA Speaker cables from the Pre Amp out but when used with DIN cables (which also light up the Displays), sound from one channel is broken and distorted, but occasionally works as it should. Problem is more prominent one one channel and acts the same no matter which or what DIN cable I use. Orange speaker light will come on and speaker goes silent occasionally. No problems whatsoever though on RCA. Reasonably confident its not the cables.....but....

    2) The Speakers grills need recovering. How does one remove the fronts? I'd rather not pull at them and stuff about until I know exactly how they come off.

3)3300 is quite distorted when in the correct Phono socket. Tried it in the AUX as suggested to another Poster, sound was quiter but still severely distorted. This is when speakers are plugged in via RCA. I have not tried it with the speaker in the DIN sockets.

    4) CD Door does not shut automaticallly. I asssume this is belt driven somewhere, as the motor is functioning but not doing what it should. I have slipped off the centre section and the white "strings" are ll in place and correct. Is the belt an easily replaceable item?

    5) Can these Penta Speakers be safely attached  to another amplifiers normal "Speaker R L out " terminals?  (ie not damaging speakers or attached amp). I presume one would use the RCA out sections to connect to another brand amplifier, and put the speaker Power switch on Auto?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and many thanks in advance to anyone who may take a little time to help me out.

    Welcome to Beoworld?

    1. Strikes me there is a problem in one of your speakers - probably just a connection though if we are lucky. Try connecting power amplifier out into the spring terminals and see what happens! Have you got the user manual?

    2. Very carefully - especially at this age! Just so you know, I have a feeling that the whole frets are actually still available anhd not too expensive. - Graham can probably advise here. Essentially there are clips which you push in and then you can release the front. I broke two removing mine and swore never to do it again!

    3. Sounds like a worn cartridge here - new ones are available from Soundsmith - but expensive!

    4. Sounds odd - is the motor working?

    5. Yes - again - have you got the manual?

New frets are still available from B&O and cost £70-100 per speaker.

Re: Many Questions on my new "Used" Pentas and Beocenter 9000

    Thanks Peter!

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.

    1) I rang the former owner and I now have the manual. I have connected speakers up as you suggested and they are working perfectly. Connected them via spring termanials to a Rotel RA-812 and ran them for hours with no problem whatsoever.  Tried them with RCA Leads from Beocenter and once again working perfectly. Its only when I introduce the multipin DIN leads into the equation that i strike problems. I am thinking it is the connections on the back of the Beocenter that are the problem? ? ?

    2) I found the clips and managed after a lot of time to carefully extract the cover. Nothing broke, so I am happy, although is very unnerving the way the come off!

    3) OK, my record collection hardly warrants an expensive Cartridge, so I may let that slide

    4) Yes, the motor is definitely running. Initially it was opening and closing about half way, but now stopped moving completely.

    5)Yep! Have the manual now.

So Q1 and Q4  are all thats holding me up now!

You can still get the rubber drive bands from B&O dealers. Ask him/her to order those for the 9300, they are identical and still on the database.

You could try cleaning the sliding channels out anyway. You will be surprised at the amount of dust and grime that has accumulated over the years.

You have put the DIN leads into the correct sockets? I mean Right and Left? The sockets on the 9000 can take them the wrong way. I suspect the cables !

    Hi,

Theres 4 DIN speaker sockets on the back of my unit. 2 of them have 3 "holes" to take the lead, the other 2 have 4 "holes" to take the leads.  I am using leads that go in the 4 hole sockets, but I can't see any difference in them?

I suspect that the mute relay is faulty! This would explain the distortion with the speakerlink cables.

Re: Many Questions on my new "Used" Pentas and Beocenter 9000

Thanks Graham. Just turned it on again, and Mute Relay is giving the correct sounding audible clicks when pressed, but i'm presently using the RCA leads, where, according to the manual the Mute will have no effect. Is there any benefit in using the DIN leads (apart from the display), over using the DIN leads?

The mute relay may well click but if the contacts are dirty, you will get distorted sound.

There is no real benefit from the DIN cables other than the displays.

    Regards Graham
