In some Beocord 5500 (and 6500, 7000) tape mechanisms there is a small belt running a tape-movement sensor. If the belt is missing there won't be any indication of tape movement to the electronics and the deck will stop. However I would have thought the deck should try reversing the tape head and playing the other side, rather than going to stop

In addition to the Masterlink socket it has a 8-pin DIN -socket (which everyone confuses for a Powerlink socket, which it isn't) for Master Control Link (MCL). I think I got it. You mention connecting your CD-player to the RCA line in jacks. The problem is that those connectors are NOT meant to be used that way! Between the "line in" and "line out" RCA sockets should be two metallic forks connecting them (ie. left line out -> left line in), like this . The "line out" RCAs are
