OK, never mind. After looking at ther service manual, I realized there were those tiny locking clips which I gently removed. You were right, the posts were more like glue than lubricated. Cleaned, re-lubed and re-assembled. Still no joy. Then I got a flash and put the old belt back on. Works like a dream. Seems the only belt my local guy was PRB FRY17

Blackrix, Thanks for the info. How does one remove the spindles. I only have the one 5500 to mess with and do not want to break it in the process. Thanks!

Also, I should note that for that one second of tape movement, it actually plays music.

As part of my latest project, I am on to the Beocord 5500 (Beomaster and CD working fine now). Just as background, picked up the whole stack including 5500 remote for $100US knowing that nothing worked. Plugged it in last night and found the drawer belt broken. No big deal, expected that. SUCCESS! My parts all arrived today. Put them in, works like a charm. Did the mod to the philips (2103, I believe) cap (33 to 47) and plays CD-R's with no problem. While in there, cleaned the rails, lubed them and replaced the drive belt. Works like new. Did have a bit of rubbing noise from the cd holdown. Placed a thin brass washer between the

Phoyer, thanks for the link! Took me a couple hours to locate all the OEM and upgrade parts but I did. Got the WIMA parts from Mouser electronics and all the rest from Newark Electronics/Element 14. Hi Richard - Same problem as above, although if I keep hitting PLAY, it does eventually play! Now that I have opened cabinet, which capacitors are you referring to? The ones on the lower board (I believe there are two), or the upper board which has many? Thanks!
