• Re: Cartridge choices - an independent test

I've noticed the "glassy" sound was mentioned in the review. I could understand the sound of SMMC 20CL could be perceived as bright, but but to my ears it is never glassy. I have had a share of "glassy" sounding equipments, like NAD M55 universal player, Sony MCH analog preamp, and some of the earlier Rotel amps, and I understand

It is an excellent review! His findings agree with what I have noticed between original CL and SMMC 20CL on Beogram 8000. I do agree that SMMC is better in detail retrieval and extension to high freq extremes. I can see how it could sound bothersome for some people. The original CL sounds very smooth and soothing to the ears. My conclusion was the original

  • Re: Sound Smith SMMC 20CL

Both the graphs from chartz and Peter show recess of 2-3dB in a wide spectrum between 1KHz and 15KHz. That'll definitely be audible, and should explain soft and mellow sound. The loading capacitance is another interesting point. Typical MM phono stages don't offer offer adjustment in loading capacitance. My EAR 834P certainly doesn't offer

That's right Peter. Two cartridges are decidedly different and there will be a preference towards one or the other. I wouldn't say Sound Smith cartridge sounds strident, but definitely sounds brighter than the stock cartridge. The stock cartridge is very mellow sounding, so sounding brighter than the stock cartridge is not necessarily a bad

  • Sound Smith SMMC 20CL

My SMMC 20CL has finally arrived! It came in a nice wooden box with ample protection with the foam. The build quality is better than I imagined. The black cartridge body looks better in real life than pictures. Although I would still prefer it in silver, black body doesn't look as ugly as I feared. Now how does it sound? Two thumbs up! I can't

  • Re: Cartridge Exercise?

I'm not sure how I feel about vinyls sounding like CDs. I'm still waiting for my Sound Smith 20CL. It's been three weeks and the suspense is killing me. It's better be good!
Any ideas of how to clean off the black goo safely??
I used "goof off" to remove all the adhesive residue on my Beogram 8000. It won't affect the aluminum or plastic parts and safe to use. You need to wet a piece of cloth with goof off then rub it on the black goo. The black goo will come off

  • Re: How good can Beogram 8000 sound?

Yeah, what an irony. San Rafael is within driving distance from where I live. Also that's where I bought my Beogram 8000.

Wow, that's great to hear. My 7 year old broke the cantilever of MMC 20CL the other day. I went ahead and ordered SMMC cartridge direct from Sound Smith, but according to them it will take up to 20 days to receive it. Apparently they custom make all the cartridges on each order. I'll have to do without vinyls for a couple of weeks, but at least

  • Re: Grounding for a Beogram

If you removed the ground from one TT and the hum disappeared, that means you never had to ground the TT in the first place. Grounding is necessary only if you experience hum. Well designed electronics in a good topology don't need separate grounding to be connected.
