You can only preset 3 positions. Position 0 is the STBY position and position 1 is the default watching position.

Can you get a feel for whether the "notchiness" eminates from under the main bed or somewhere in the wire cable area? First check that the CD mech is level with the main bed. As an aid to diagnosis, I would release the sledge (details in service manual) and move the sledge manually to try and get a feel for where the problem occurs.
