You are correct--Beocom 4 isa stand alone unit. You would need either Beocom 6000 (I don't recommend this unit. In the US, it had many issues.) or Beocom1 &/or Beocom 2 combo plus the base station. The base stations lets you control up to 8 handsets, either all Beocom 1s or 2s or a combo of the two. The Beocom 2 is not as impractical as it seems
