I think you'll find the upscaling in the BeoSystem 3 is as good as it gets

The BeoLink Passive is basically a ML control eye and an amplifier. The amplifier would sit indoors somewhere, with a long lead to connect to the IR eye which could be seated outdoors somewhere along with the speakers.

They don't necessarily need to have variable volume, although it would be ideal. I agree RE the use of DSPs, but this too has it's disadvantages, mainly cost related...

I was going to make the dual-transformer point, something they've been doing since the BeoCenter 9300 I think...

I would never use BeoLabs outdoors, most definitely not recommended. B&W's weatherproof speakers are fantastic, and together with a BeoLink Passive should do everything you want...

A digital input on most of the BeoLabs will be as useful and beneficial as a chimney on a submarine.

Flappo The Grate: you'd think they'd have learned their lesson the last time they took apple on ah well.. Apple doesn't have anything like the BeoSound 5 in it's product range. Apple makes software, computers, phones and MP3 players, not HiFis. You put yourself in the firing line if you produce any of those.

Check the positions switches. These affect the bass response of the speakers. If you set the switch to 'Corner', the speaker will produce less bass, wheras if you set the switch to 'Free', the speaker will produce as much bass as it can.

I'd be seriously dubious of a speaker horn that shape. Highs should be distributed on a more 90ºx40º (horizontal x vertical) axis, or on the extreme, the Acoustic Lens which is 180ºx30º (not 100% sure of the vertical distribution). These seem to be the complete opposite. That looks to be around 30ºx90º or possibly even more, which means a large proportion
