Hi Michael, This is a very respectable solution. With this you could even tack on a Beo6 for total control... Anywho... If the customer is starting fresh, why not start with a dedicated pre-amp? I will recommend a Rotel, Integra, and if the budget is big enough, Meridian. I would detail this further but I am short on time! Maybe after class

I think the ABL gizmo will keep them in working order for a long time to come. Removing the mini plug will likely damage the tweeters, if anything. I would still avoid it. As others have said, don't worry, you will be fine.
