Yep, you definately need thin steel for this repair. And yep, it sounds like the limit switch at the end of the black plastic assembly isn't being made. You may need to check that this switch or part of the assembly hasn't got damaged during the repair - they aren't particularly robust. I have a replacement assembly with this switch intact

The sound is really very good and works particularly well with CX speakers. I think C40's were the recommended speakers so that doesn't surprise me. There is no distortion at all even when the volume is pushed quite high. Perfect for this type of application and would also work well in a smallish room as a main system but I would probably use

Checking the cartridge is pretty straightforward. Simply insert it up side down & press play and gently touch the stylus when the tonearm drops (ie the muting relay cuts out). If you now get noise from only the left hand channel then the cartridge is goosed. If you still get noise from the right channel then the problem is elsewhere. If the latter

It will probably need a minor adjustment to sort out. The left hand mechanism also acts as the mechanical link to operate the "lid closed" microswitch and any minor differences on the hinge repair will affect this as the tolerances are pretty tight.
