They could be upgraded. If you check the cable it should be extremly thick there is also a switch in the side of the unit, however that is not a guarrentee that it has a demodulator board built in - I think you would have to remove the servo panel to be absolutely sure!

I have 3000 apart at the moment which had similar symptoms Dave but I very much doubt yours has the same problem (at least for your sake I hope not!!) Jaques I have sh!t loads of meccano - I will have a look to see if there are any suitable pulleys. I think they would need drilling and modding but that shouldn't be problem. I suspect they will either be a little too big or small from memory but worth looking! I also have my grandfathers ML7 lathe in the garage but haven't a clue how to use

The tone arm is there, but the sensor arm was removed to make life easier (easier to remove than disconnect!).If you look at the lower end of the horizontal pivot system, you can see the fulcrum point has snapped off it's mounting! That must have been a heck of a knock to the arm and amazingly, apart from the platter, there is no other damage! Nice
