Depends how dirty you want to get I've used and discarded loads of miracle junk over the years, this is where I ended up... General light dust removal off the disk - I use a carbon fibre brush. Dead common, get one from Maplins or eBay. I found mine shed some fibres at first, but now that it's broken in it works faultlessly. A Watts dustbug

PETERMINTER: Steve, Your description is very helpful and makes sense to me. I will diassasemble the speed change as best I can and try to spot the problem. It used to take a warm-up before it reached speed or achieved enough torque to pull the record round under the drag of a record cleaner. Try the easy stuff first though - how clean is the lens on the laser? I use a cotton bud moistened with distilled water to wipe mine clean, though there are are proper cleaning fluids for this job (also good for the tape heads.)
