It's not necessary, but recommended. The RF Amplifier does more than just amplify, it also ensures good "Impedance" matching which is very important to ensure the best possible analogue signal to your link TV. Also, if you also require the main aerial signal to your link TV as well, it is multiplexed with the RF output from the Beovision

It is possible to update the firmware, but before you consider getting that done, check the 4 digit "Type" number as previously stated as its more than likely that you have a US version which will not work even if the firmware in the base of the Beocom 6000 was updated.

No, provided you do not change the location of the program from the default, the old version is uninstalled and the new version is then installed. As with all new version installations, its always a good policy to create a "Restore Point" at least, prior to the upgrade and if you are like me, all my systems get full image backups every night
