Yes, it is adjustable. Not by those three screws (which allow adjusting the ruler longitudinally, moving the touchdown point), but two other screws holding the bracket where the ruler is attached. Service manual page 3-2.

Not for me either. I want a remote I can use without looking at it, so I'll never go to something with only a touch screen. Besides, I'm icon blind (dunno if that's a real medical condition). If my desktop with dozens of app shortcuts gets messed up, I'll spend ages hunting for an icon. I don't want touch screen or soft key remotes

I can see the benefit: the base station needs to be next to a telephone socket (and can be even hidden), while you can place a separate charger stand where ever you wish. The sockets aren't necessarily in a convenient place.

The diodes seem just rectifiers for the power supply, I'm sure 1N400x:s or similar silicon diodes will do. I think it was the AF11x types that are most likely to grow internal whiskers... but all germanium transistors are rather fragile by today's standards. Anyway if they work, I'd leave them alone; the exact measurements can vary a lot
