The US has always been included! The preponderance of UK winners is due to the fact that there are more UK Gold members than any other nation so the chances are more than the winners come from the UK. As they say, you have to be in it to win it! Delighted to hear that you are a winner though!

It seems very variable. I have a couple of SP cartridges which are completely fine. However I do think the suspension in cartridges ages. Th best test of this is the playing of CD4 records. This makes them track at up to 45 kHz. (Only useful in 6000s and CLs really!) None of my 6000s work well now (they used to) and the CLs vary.

They both use datalink so it is certainly worth a try. It would isolate which unit has the problem.

A Beomaster 5000 would be far more compact and you can use any of the B&O CD players. It will work with the present system. They are relatively cheap - one with the MCP (which is different and better to the 7700 one) went for £45. You can attach a tape player and a record player and it will take up much less space. I would suggest getting

The normal connection is via the RGB and RS232 sockets on the BS2. The set top box connects via Scart and digital in if it has one.
