I think you need to spend a decent amount of money to get a half decent PC scope - I might be wrong but IMO you are better off with a decent second hand CRO! They have plumeted in price since LCD units have become cheaper and more powerful! You can get some scopes with built in waveform generators but you should be able to get a nice little audio waveform

I am sure you are aware that the only way to test this properly is not with a high impeadance meter but to perform an insulation test with a suitable meter. I think this will tell you all is well :)

No, very lucky if he got £100 with the Beomaster issues and no doubt the cd player will need looking at sooner or later. Also the cosmetic description of the items is not good enough and leaves more questions than the statement attempts to answer IMO. Maybe try lowering r61 (assuming the 2u2 is still in place) slightly Jacqes? The muting circuit is controlled from the output of this section of the opamp and I would suggest the final charging of the capcitor slowed down sufficiantly that perhaps the mute circuit would have 'activated' sometime later than you would have been prepared to wait
