Yes, the potentiometers are coal based and could be worn but in most cases it's just dust and dirt on the coal tracks and adjacent contact tracks. If you only have 5 pins you need to mount two extra pins for datalink communication. They screw into tiny threaded holes and will become new outermost pins in the DIN (positions 6 and 7). Martin
