If you send a bitstream of DTS HD to a decoder which is only capable to decode DTS (you now the original lossy format), you WILL hear music because the container of DTS HD is backward compatable. It also contains the DTS signal. I do not know of this is also the case with DD TrueHD (I think not!) But you will not hear the DTS HD format!!
