Pressing the Beo4 PC will allow the Active to take the incoming music source either a PC or other input, Bose clock radio, turntable, cassette... I upgraded the 8000's some time ago and thought the process was well worth it. There are various levels of component replacement depending on the version and age of the speaker. There was a TIB (not sure if its called that) that details an update for BS9000 models with a similar problem that moved from vertical to flat. No idea why, mine was a MKII unit and it was easily fixed by service but it wouldn't work flat at all suffering the same problem you describe. Could be another avenue to try. ...
