When connected to iTunes the serail number will be displayed - not much help really unless the Plod actually recover it when you could then prove it was yours. Also, was it engraved with anything on the rear?? Again that could help prove its rightful owner should it be recovered. Reporting a stolen iPod to Apple who could then have iTunes disable it

Not bothered either way really (although I do own a 5000 system) since you can always use the search facility but in defence of those in the "For" camp the 7000 system was in production until '95 - does that really count as vintage?? Anyhoo -

Is the clock backed up by battery?? This could explain it if the battery has failed.

Class D amps are pretty common in small, portable appliances and integrated Class D amp IC's are made by many chip manufacturers. To reiterate Peter's point there is no magic in Class D amplifiers, as always the devil is in the detail. I'n sure the U600 isn't quite up to Lab5 standards

On the same tack I've never understood why people spend a fotune on in-car "hifi" (not just the kids with the ridiculous boom boxes etc) and I would include the Audi A8 in this group. Firstly there will always be engine, tyre and wind noise to raise lower the signal to noise ratio to way below what would be acceptable for "hifi"

As this is a common problem that often crops up on the forum can we list willing repairers who can complete a full service and calibration, as outlined by Dillen above, and their location so that people can follow up and have them serviced should they wish to do so. A price estimate (for motor cleaning and calibration) excl. shipping etc. would also

Mine can be temperamental if it hasn't been used for a while. Symptoms are - not reading the beginning of first track or failing to read to disc at all. With perseverence (keep putting the disc in again and again - it can take a good while) it can be coaxed back to life but I suspect it is the onset of the "motor needs lubricating" problem
