• Re: What Are You Working On Now ?

No, that's excellent - don't change anything. The Wima's are very high-grade film capacitors, the Nichicon KT's are electrolytics. If you already put the film capacitors in, do not downgrade to an electrolytic. BTW, the Panasonic FC's are not considered Low-ESR caps, and they are fine for this work (but I just prefer Nichicon HE

Can you post some close-up pics of the actual laser unit and its flexible PCB. You may have to do some disassembly here. I'll try and identify the replacement laser for you. Menahem

  • Re: A Bargain?

I just received an Axel-retipped MMC20. I chose the Shibata option. He redid the suspension as well. Beautiful sound - a great improvement over the original. I'm very pleased with his work. Menahem

  • Re: Flash your B&O!
Newer systems probably sound better....
But you're wrong! Newer systems only sound better because all the components are fresh. Restore a vintage system, with fresh components where required, and it will outperform a new system every time! For the purposes of honest comparison, in both of them there are

Panasonic - good. Low-ESR in audio section - good (can be harsh), but prefer Nichicon KT audio. Low-ESR in power section - not good - causes stress on transformer, and may oscillate some Pi circuits, causing semiconductor breakdown. Low-ESR in power circuits is good only in SMPS - Switch-Mode Power Supplies, which this vintage B&O is NOT! For this

Electrolytics - Nichicon HE, Panasonic 220uF SU Bipolar, Panasonic TSHA (the 3900uF 63V to fit nicely) 4.7uF and smaller - Wima MKS2 Many resistors also required replacement, and as I mentioned also transistors and diodes. I can put together a kit of most of the pieces for you - contact me offline.

New belts are definitely in order. Try Martin first. I would always replace belts before restringing. Menahem

  • Re: on/off lever for beogram 4002

Is that the CD4-OFF switch at the front right side, or the semi-round T-shaped lever at the back of the BeoGram? Menahem

  • Re: BeoGram 4000 Restoration

Solved . Sometimes I don't do what I know I should do, and it prolongs the troubleshooting process. The AC versions of the BG4000, 4002 and 6000, all have a very similar circuit with regard to the solenoid activation of lowering the arm. The /\ or \/ signal comes from the keyboard in a very similar way, and is then passed to the solenoid via 2 driver

Leslie Well, I think you sell yourself short. What you think you may be lacking in electronic ability, you more than make up for in design and cosmetic restoration ability! Menahem
