I personally find the BeoLab 9s outperform the BeoLab 2 in terms of out-and-out bass performance very, very consistently, and they're smoother/better defined than the BeoLab 3 as well IMO. Agreed - while the BeoLab 5s do allow greater flexibility of placement than other large speakers due to the ABC, they still sound better when placed correctly! I've just pulled my B&W standmounts out an extra 4" from the wall, and the difference it's made is phenomenal!

Is it possible it's because you went from a 26" to a 40"? Smaller screens will look to have more depth if you sit at the same distance by their very nature when compared to larger screens. How far are you watching from?

The Wii controller thing is actually quite easy to do - I've done it before with my controllers! You need a piece of software called WiiToMidi. After enabling the IAC driver in OS X, you just pair your controller with the software, and you get X/Y as two separate MIDI channels, plus all the buttons. You could control say, pitch with the Y motion

Ah now that I had never thought of! I've only ever tried to recone two (identical) drivers and failed - they worked, but sounded poor and sounded very strange off-axis (huge mid-spike, all other mids disappeared ).

I would personally just order new drivers. While the re-cone may be cheaper, IMO it's not worth the hassle. It can affect the sound in a negative way too, unless you can get the driver absolutely perfectly aligned.

I'd have to disagree - BeoLab 5s deliver far more punch than the BeoLab 2 does in my experience, and are much better for both movies and music (with music being the biggest improvement).
