Yes, distorted sound is a symptom of a worn stylus. Unfortunately, there is no effective way of checking other than replacement with another or get yours re-tipped by Axel.

If you download the BS9000 Mk3 service manual from this site you will be able to view the diagram of the stand and fittings with part numbers.

I did look into this quite recently. I searched the internet in the suggested places but could not find a suitable replacement laser for this particular CD drive type at a reasonable price. Lasers would appear to be available quite cheaply for CDM4 types (£15 or so) but the price for replacements for CDM Pro types were around £100 Maybe

That's a good price. Nearly all examples that become available have dents in the stainless steel panels. If they really are mint, you have a bargain. They are just not the same with dents and B&O ain't making any more!!! I just sold my mint pair for the same money but brackets and manual were included. I have sold several other pairs for
