Yes on both counts - the 5500 system (pretty much identical to the 6500) was initially supplied with the CD50 until the CD5500 was introduced. (I assume you do know the aluminium finish is different (brushed on the CD50)

Agree - but who encoded the samples, which encoder did they use etc. etc. I would encourage those that can to try their own experiment, using their own encoder (be it iTunes or whatever) and their own source material and listen again.
