The MCL2P is just a power amplifier. The varaible volume work is done by the MCL2AV which takes the variable line level of the MCL and then has a pre-amplifier. Before that, the ability to program the system to switch on and off at certain times was a huge bonus. You can still get other make light units to do much the same - and they are cheaper. I have one! If you really want one, you need to see Frede! As well as restoring B&O, he is also an official Thorens restorer. They do come up on eBay at times but will almost always need full restoration. Whether it is sensible is another question. Probably easier to just get a Thorens TD124 and whichever arm and cartridge you want. Much easier
