David, the only way I have ever been able to mute the picture on my Avant (32 vhs) when wanting to listen to a sound source is by doing this. Whilst watching TV or Sat, switch off, then while it is parking itself, quickly press AV, Radio, CD, Phono or A Tape. I'm sure this is not the way it is supposed to work, but it works for me.
