I'm not surprised. Many CD players of this vintage have problems with burnt CD's. It's something to do with reflectivity. As Alex suggests, try another brand and definitely burn at the slowest rate.

Only Passive Speakers 2 will play if you press MUTE.

Both will come on together, then you can press MUTE on the remote or front panel to stop Speakers 1 and the powerlinks.
