Well, I've tested with a MPS3904 and it works! The overload beacon remains unlit and I get sound on both channels! Voltages OK. Now time to repair the protection circuit, if someone could come up with an idea please... given that the relay works.

Found the little rascal! The more I read the diagram, the more I inspected the positive rail (yes, I woke up very alert today!). It turns out to be the MPSA06. Shorted collector-emitter junction.
