Hi John and a warm welcome to Beoworld. It could well be that there are other handsets registered to this base from times gone by. I would recommend removing all handsets except the one you use to do it, then add them all again. As far as I remember, a Mark 1 will only ask for a PIN if it has reached its maximum of six handsets.
