FWIW, all of mine (those that were not broken) have had the stylus more or less in line with the cartridge bottom (or the B&O script). This includes my SMMC4 as well. Perhaps a bit lower when off the record and a bit higher when playing, of course. Seems only natural when you think of the internal construction of the cartridge - why would it be

Stonk, I also have a 707 with broken sliders (otherwise very nicely packaged for delivery, just too tight ) So you have tried simply gluing the fork/prong part back on to the finger slider, and it didn't work?

I guess they just do that depending on the environment. In the case it happens to be cigarette tar you could try cleaning them (needs disassembly), but I believe in most cases the plastic itself gets yellow from UV light or something. The only replacement is to try and find clearer sliders out of a donor machine, I'm afraid.

Depending on how you would grind the metal, I'd be also quite worried about it heating enough to ruin the cone surround or warp the entire basket.
