The Adam A7s sat on my desk are pretty high up on the ugly list! They sound quite good though!! Monitoring speakers, so they're not strictly 'HiFi'...

I really wish B&O would produce some a noise-cancelling version of the A8. It's still one of the best in-ears I've listened to, but doesn't really offer enough isolation to make them usable when walking next to a noisy road. I still use mine all the time, and they're about 5-6 years old now! And yes, the B&W P5s are disappointing

The 805 and BeoLab 3 are two quite different speakers - both fantastic in their own different way, mainly as a result of the Acoustic Lens (which makes the BeoLab 3 extremely different in it's character). It's four times the amount of power, but double the amplitude. The 6dB increase arises because 17.24m is the full wavelength of a 20Hz wave. The wave gets to the end of it's cycle, hits the back wall, and bounces back on itself perfectly in-phase. It's not so much you need to be the right distance from the speaker for the bass note to 'develop', it's more that in small spaces, the room dimensions are approaching half the wavelength of the deeper notes, which is where standing waves happen.
