I am able to control my BeoSystem 5000 with a Harmony 890.

It's possible the one with a larger dust cap had been repaired and a new, larger dust cap installed. If you gently press on the speaker cones do you hear of feel any scraping sound? If so, there is some damage to the speaker.

I'm glad they worked the clock problem, but that really seemed to take a long time to address.

I'm thrilled with my BS5000 since I have all passive speaker systems. I find the sound quality of the BM5000 to be very similar to my BeoCenter 3500. My preference is the 5000 due to the flexibility of datalink and the expadibility of the MCL82 links.

I found this old post because I'm trying to find an old code convertor too. I was trying to find any identification numbers for it to help in my searches. I can tell you it is possible to program a Harmony remote to control the BeoSystem 5000. I have a 890 set up for that.

After reviewing the service manual, there seems to be more than just a plug lead involved. A portion of a shared chip (IC3) is in use to drive the preamp output, but it seems unlikely the chip would be bad since it seems to work fine when the other portion is in use to drive the output stage. I think you'll need some assistance from folks more experienced
