S/PDIF is the connection type, not the data format. S/PDIF and TOS-Link are the two major digital connection methods. PCM, AC3, and MPG spring to mind as common data/encoding formats. BeoLab 5s will only accept PCM, for good reason, much higher quality than anything else.

When set up correctly, they sound great. When set up incorrectly, the high-end and bass can take over a bit and mask the mids. Overall though, a much better speaker than the BeoLab 1, and better low-end performance than a BeoLab 2. Much smaller too! I'd let your ears be the judges though, making sure the speakers are set up as they should be in your

Soundproof, you're forgetting the harmonics formed when two separate sounds from two microphones are combined, which reach way beyond 20 KHz if the audio in the individual channels reaches above 2 KHz. Otherwise both will not be reproduced faithfully...

What!? BeoLab 5s or BeoLab 9s? I would have 5s any day over 9s unless I was really pushed for a more discreet design or cash. I'd personally never add a BeoLab 2 to the 9s. All you're going to do is degrade the sound, the performance from the 9's 'subs' is better than that of the BeoLab 2 (although the 2 goes louder).

Shows how much he knows what he's talking about. You don't hear sounds over 19 KHz or therabouts directly, but harmonics in 'supersonic' frequencies massively affect the sound you hear above 2 KHz in ways you wouldn't expect.
